Gateshead is a borough of contrasts being made up of a number of smaller urban centres and busy employment areas such as Blaydon, Whickham, Felling and Birtley based around the main town centre area situated on the south side of the River Tyne directly opposite from Newcastle and connected via seven bridges, Gateshead is perfectly placed within Tyne and Wear for those looking to commute. However around two thirds of the borough is rural with numerous smaller settlements such as Kibblesworth, Sunniside, Chopwell and High Spen.

Connections

Getting around the North East couldn't be easier with the area benefiting from a host of transport links to include rail stations operated by Tyne & Wear Metro leading to Sunderland, Newcastle and beyond and Northern Rail station with trains running to Middlesbrough and Newcastle, with some services carrying on to Carlisle, Edinburgh and London Kings Cross. Gateshead Interchange is the busiest bus station in Tyne & Wear with buses providing easy transport around the region. Several major road links pass through Gateshead, including the A1 and the A184.

Shopping & Leisure

Gateshead has a wide range of retail facilities for shoppers to enjoy such as the Metrocentre being the UK’s largest indoor mall-style shopping centres, conveniently situated beside the A1, Retail World Team Valley and Gateshead Trinity Square boasting Tesco Extra alongside Vue Cinema, Argos, Boots and more. To the south lies Low Fell with a good range of local shops. Major initiatives such as the Sage Gateshead Music Centre, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead College and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge have all been developed over recent years.

Education

For those with finding the right school at the top of their agenda then don’t look too far with a range of local primary and senior schools which can be found around the Borough and of course, not forgetting Gateshead College boasting six campuses, for academic and vocational courses.

Flood Risk
Surface Water
Very Low
Unlike flooding from rivers, surface water flooding can happen many miles from a river, often in places that people wouldn’t expect because it’s a long way from a river or stream – it happens simply because there is nowhere else for the rainwater to go. Risk ratings are measured as:
High Risk - an area which has a chance of flooding of greater than 1 in 30 (3.3%) in any one year.
Medium Risk - an area which has a chance of flooding of greater than 1 in 100 (1.0%) in any one year.
Low Risk - an area which has a chance of flooding of greater than 1 in 1000 (0.1%) in any one year.
Very Low Risk - an area in which the risk is below 1 in 1000 (0.1%) in any one year

Council Tax pays for multiple services in the property's local authority with only part of it going to the council itself. Residences within a Parish or Town Council area have an additional charge to fund the body. Each parish/town council has a different budget and imposes different fees. Not all councils have parishes/town councils and this varies across the country.

In instances where parish/town councils do affect the council tax value and we do not have the exact figure, we present council tax data with the below highlights. Take care to confirm which is being presented by the dashboard as this will need to be made clear to your clients:

avg - When we indicate the Council Tax price is 'avg', it means we have not been able to obtain an exact figure, so this number represents the mean value of Council Tax across the council for that property band. The exact figure will be slightly higher or lower because each parish/town council is priced differently.

min - When we indicate the Council Tax is a 'min', it represents the known amount that the council sets for itself, but excludes the parish/town council cost which we have not been able to obtain. The additional cost will need to be considered as it will be greater than the indicated price.
