Location
Whickham is a Town in the Metropolitan of Gateshead, situated on high ground overlooking the River Tyne and the MetroCentre, five miles South West of Newcastle and four miles West of Gateshead. Whickham is semi-rural, whilst being close to major towns Gateshead and Newcastle, it also has its fair share of green spaces such as Chase Park in the heart of the Town. Whickham is well known for its colourful flower displays which are entered into the annual RHS Britain in Bloom competition, and even features its own Whickham Hermitage Community Garden on the front street.
Connections
Public Transport to Whickham is very good with a large number of bus routes and bus stops throughout the Town. There is no train station in Whickham itself, but there is in Dunston, Blaydon and the Metro Centre which are all only a short drive from Whickham. Residents therefore have easy access to nearby towns such as Newcastle and Gateshead. Whickham is also a short distance from the A1(M) and the A184, giving access to Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Northumberland and Newcastle via the Tyne Bridge. Whickham is therefore an ideal location for those looking to commute to nearby Towns.
Shopping and Leisure
Whickham has a wide variety of shops, restaurants and services such as estate agents and solicitors. The main road through Whickham is Front Street and this is home to the main shops within Whickham, which includes a mixture of both chain high street stores and smaller independent shops. Locals have access to green grocers, butchers, dentists, hairdressers, bakers, banks and pharmacies all within the local Town Centre. Whickham is also just over a mile from the Metro Centre, Gateshead’s own shopping centre and the UK’s original ‘mega mall’ in 1986. Residents can benefit from nearby Dunston and Blaydon Leisure Centre facilities, Derwent Walk Country Park and National Trust’s Gibside which are also close by.
Education
Whickham has a selection of well rated nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools and sixth forms and is extremely popular for families looking to move to gain access to the School’s catchment areas. The well known Secondary school Emmanuel College is also close-by to Whickham.
