About Jarrow
Jarrow is a popular town located on the south bank The River Tyne about six miles inland from the coastal town of South Shields and roughly eight miles from Gateshead and Newcastle City where a wealth of amenities, leisure facilities, wide range of shops and shopping malls can be found together with pubs and a bustling nightlight.
Connections
Getting around the North East couldn't be easier with the local Metro Station offering frequent services and Bus Connections leading to Newcastle City Centre, Durham, Sunderland and everything in between in addition to road links via the A194 and A19/Tyne Tunnel together with the A1M.
Shopping & Leisure
Shop until you drop at Intu Eldon Square in Newcastle City Centre or Intu Metrocentre in Gateshead. If you need a quick stop for your regular bits and pieces, call into the Viking Shopping Centre where a good range of shops and supermarkets can be found including Iceland, Morrisons, B&M, Wilkos and more. Jarrow Community Hub has just recently undergone a programme of refurbishment offering good leisure facilities which includes the library. From local delights such as Sandhaven Beach in South Shields to Bede's Way Walk and the vast countryside and coast of Northumberland and Durham, there are plenty of places to explore.
Education
If finding the right school is at the top of your agenda then you won't have to look too far with a range of local primary schools and Jarrow School (the former Grammar School then Springfield) to become what it is today, situated on Field Terrace. A little further away is South Tyneside College, Gateshead College and of course, Newcastle Universities.
Local History
Jarrow was primarily a Ship building town with the main employer being Charles Palmer who founded a Shipyard in 1852. After the closure of this, Ellen Wilkinson a Member of Parliament led the Jarrow March to London in 1936 to highlight the lack of jobs and employment and petition the Government and her statue can be seen at the entrance to the shopping precinct near Morrisons Supermarket.
